The DLSU Green Archers withstood a 4th quarter surge by the NU Bulldogs in their bout last September 11, 2019 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Both teams entered the game empty on the win column with DLSU having lost their season opener to defending champions Ateneo Blue Eagles, and NU narrowly losing in overtime to the Adamson Soaring Falcons.

The Green Archers took control of the game early, opening up a 22-12 lead after the first quarter and keeping the Bulldogs at bay until the third quarter. Key contributions for the Green and White were double-doubles from Justine Baltazar, leading all scorers for DLSU with 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Jaime Malonzo with 14 points and 11 rebounds, 8 of which were offensive rebounds. Aljun Melecio had 11 markers and 4 assists, while team captain Andrei Caracut led the team in assists with 6.

With DLSU having a 77-64 lead in the opening minutes of the final quarter, NU mustered a late comeback, led by Shaun Ildefonso’s 26 points in total, including a clutch three pointer that gave NU an 82-81 lead. Kurt Lojera saved the day for the Green Archers with a late jumper 14 seconds remaining in the game that gave DLSU an 83-82 lead they would never give up in the final out-of-timeout play by the Bulldogs.

During the post-game media query, DLSU Coach Gian Nazario opened up about the inexperience of the new staff of the team, including the new players, citing about possible learnings from the game, and key points they’d like to address, in preparation for future games.

The Green Archers are now 4th in team standings (1-1), whilst the Bulldogs slide down to 7th (0-2). The next game for La Salle will be against the UE Red Warriors (0-3) at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 2:00PM.
