The DLSU Green Archers suffered another heartbreaking loss, this time at the hands of the UP Fighting Maroons earlier afternoon at the Mall of Asia Arena, 72-71.
For 39 minutes, the Green-and-White held the lead, thanks to the double-digit scoring efforts of the main veteran core of Aljun Melecio (16 points), Andrei Caracut (16 points, 4 assists), and Justine Baltazar (13 points, 9 rebounds). Jamie Malonzo chipped in 7 points and 13 rebounds.
Entering the final quarter, DLSU was in the lead 59-52. The Fighting Maroons held their ground, not letting the Archers get to a double-digit lead in the quarter. UP favorite Kobe Paras had 21 points, going 13/14 from the charity stripe. For the game, UP garnered 24/26 free throws, while DLSU only made 9/17 from the line. Caracut and Melecio hit clutch threes in the frame, and Baltazar gave DLSU a 71-67 lead with 1:30 left before fouling out. After a crucial turnover with less than 15 seconds, UP guard Juan Gomez de Llano hit a three-pointer that gave the Maroons its first and only lead of the game.
The Green Archers are now 2-4 in team standings, 5th overall, 1 game behind the Adamson Soaring Falcons for 4th place. With their final game for Round 1 scheduled on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 2:00PM at the Mall of Asia Arena against the UST Growling Tigers (4-2), provided they win, DLSU still has a chance to finish as amongst the top 4.
