OUTLIVE2021: Reimagining a Future Worth Living

Standing on the shoulders of the giants that came before us serves as a reminder of how we can reimagine a future worth living. Without the political determination of Abraham Lincoln, the abolition of slavery may not have come to fruition. Without the persistence and ingenuity of Steve Jobs, the iPhone may not have revolutionized consumer technology to where it is today. Without the defiance of Dr. Martin Luther King, the civil rights movement may just have stayed as a dream. No matter what career you may be in or what interests you as a person, there are always those who have broken barriers and defied the system in pursuit of excellence and leaving a lasting legacy. But what is a legacy? What allowed them to achieve such remarkable feats that changed the world for the better? EXCEL2022 wants to reinvigorate what legacy means to the current generation, specifically focusing on the ability for young individuals to see themselves as part of broader society and empowered to impact change for the better.

“OUTLIVE 2021” with the theme “Reimagining a Future Worth Living” is an event that aims to highlight the values, practices, and mindset of distinguished Filipino leaders in their respective fields, namely: Industry, Non-government Organizations, and Government while inspiring Lasallians to discover their purpose, pursue a meaningful career, and impact the world for the better. The event will feature three installments: Sustainability in the Industry Field, Legacy-Building from the Lens of an NGO Officer, and the Role of the Youth in Nation building and Responsible Governance which will be held on May 7, 14, and 21, respectively, from 3:00-5:00 P.M. via Zoom teleconferencing and live-streaming on the official EXCEL2022 Facebook page. In addition to the speakers, it also invited esteemed student leaders to stimulate an intellectual discourse for the audience to gain a different perspective about the problems that the current generation is facing and inspire people of all ages that they too can affect change even at a young age.

More than just a source of inspiration, the event allows aspiring individuals to tap into the minds of influential leaders and equip them with the necessary mindsets, skills, and abilities that will enable them to also create big things and transcend limitations in their respective fields. Moreover, it emboldens the value of critical thinking in navigating the complexities of the problems everyone faces so that they can introduce innovative solutions in their minds and pursue them with a strong passion in their hearts. More importantly, the event wants to shape the next set of leaders who are empowered to take action and fulfill their own legacy so that everyone involved can reimagine a future worth living.

Cultivating a lasting legacy is a personal journey for all. It requires trying new things, honing one’s craft, and contributing to the community, society, and world. EXCEL2022 highlights the fact that legacy may not be a story we can tell in our lifetime. As Chuck Palahniuk would put it, “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, but to create something that will”. In the end, what’s important is that we are part of the narrative in changing the world for the better and creating something that will outlive us all forever.
